Vice President (Inter-Campus Affairs) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Vanessa Egbeahie has expressed worry over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has kept public-owned universities’ students at home for over seven months.

This was on Monday in Lagos when Comrade Vanessa joined her colleagues at NANS and other Nigerian students and stakeholders to shut down the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, in protest against the continued closure of varsity campuses.

CAMPUS GIST reports that ASUU had on February 14, 2022 embarked on a four weeks (one month) warning strike which was later extended to six months over the failure of the Federal Government to meet their demands.

Vanessa lamented that several students including herself have been stuck in one academic level since the strike started, and those residing in off-campus who have their hostel rents renewed are counting their loses as almost one year rent had been wasted due to the ongoing ASUU strike.

“It shows they (government) do not take us serious when it comes to education. We are not asking for too much; end ASUU strike and fund education in Nigeria. The situation is taking a toll on us (the students) and our parents, government is not taking (we) the future of this nation serious,” Vanessa said.

The NANS Vice President, who bemoaned the ugly situation, lamented that several Law students in the public-owned universities that has been shut for months now, will miss out on Law School if nothing is done immediately to end the lingering ASUU strike.
