The National leadership of the National Association of Edo State Students, NAESS, has announced an interim government for the Edo state students’ body at the national level.
In a communiqué jointly signed by Chapter Presidents, NAESS said the the interim national leadership will pilot the affairs of the students’ body until the next election.
The communiqué which was made available to CAMPUS GIST on Monday, in Benin City, was entitled ‘Desperate Measures for Desperate Times; the Revamp of NAESS National Body.’
CAMPUS GIST gathered that the interim administration will consist of Chapter Presidents as members of the National Executive Council (NEC) and Principal Officers of the National Representative Council (NRC).
“They will focus on the rehabilitation of the fractured structures of the national body”, the communiqué partly read. “Upon stability, the interim leadership will see to the conduct of a unity convention to bring in a new democratically elected Government … and the constitution of a review committee to amend the NAESS National Constitution,” it continued.
The National Association of Edo State Students, NAESS, prides itself as “the apex communal vesicle for all students who draw origin from Edo State in tertiary institutions across the country, Nigeria and beyond.”
See the communiqué below:
DESPERATE MEASURES FOR DESPERATE TIMES; THE REVAMP OF NAESS NATIONAL BODY.
The National body of the National Association of Edo State Students hereafter referred to as our ‘Family’ has agonizingly been confronted with perilous storms that caused the relapse of our ship conveying our collective identity and also severed our ties. The very ties upon which our unity as Edo State were enshrined. The Heartbeat of our family had literally stopped, leaving the other members of the family to endure suffering, face intimidation and risk unnecessary exposure to the ills of the Educational system in Nigeria, without a soothing voice to pacify their hurt.
The consequences of the non-functionality of the National arm of our association has been colossal. The devastating situation has permitted organizational crimes against Edo State Students in our tertiary institutions especially within the State without the most minimal resistance. Our family had served and should continuously serve, as the apex communal vesicle for all Students who draw origin from Edo State in tertiary institutions across the country and beyond. Consequently, we cannot but take exception to her passivity or should we say, dissolution.
In the philosophical words of William Shakespeare, ‘Desperate times breed desperate measures’. These resounding words in the heads of chapter presidents who constitute the National Representative Council (NRC) alongside their Secretary Generals (Part V, Section 7, Article 2) has led to this move to ensure the recuperation of our family and the functional stability of our distorted heartbeat.
Sequel to Part V, Section 8 of the NAESS constitution that cites the powers and functions of the NRC, the substantive NRC members have thus resolved to activate the powers of Article 1 that bestows on the NRC the powers to make and ratify policies and decision of the association.
The decisions of the substantive NRC are thus;
— The collapse of the National body of NAESS is detrimental to our identity as Edo State Students and we consequently ratify the decision to constitute an interim government upon whose letterhead, this communique has been released.
— The interim administration will consist of chapter presidents as members of the National Executive Council (NEC) and principal officers of the NRC. They will focus on the rehabilitation of the fractured structures of the NAESS National body.
— Upon stability, the interim leadership will see to the conduct of a unity convention to bring in a new democratically elected Government.
— Upon stability, the interim leadership will see to the Constitution of a review committee to amend the NAESS National Constitution.
— The Constitution of an interim leadership is permitted to contravene the acts of Part VI, Section 9, Article 2, Part VIII, Section 15, Article 6 and other acts in the supreme constitution that militate against the inclusion of chapter presidents in the National Executive Council of NAESS.
— The National Executive Council will be inaugurated officially with all relevant authorities of the state acquainted.
These are indeed desperate measures for desperate times but are necessary if the heartbeat of our family must be heard again.
We therefore call on the leadership of Edo State Government, the security infrastructure of the State and all relevant authorities to grant their outmost cooperation.
We also appeal vehemently to all Stakeholders, past and present NAESS office holders to give this reform, their maximum support and cooperation to ensure that the image of NAESS is preserved and the past glory of NAESS is restored.
Long live NAESS National,
Long live Edo State,
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Greatest NAESS! The Heartbeat!!!.
