The striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Monday, said the leadership of the union is expected to get a deal from the Federal Government and present it to its members.
President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke stated this while addressing journalists after a closed-door meeting with lawmakers at the National Assembly, Abuja.
CAMPUS GIST reports that the meeting which was at the instance of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, is the second in recent time since the union embarked on strike February 14 this year.
The ASUU President said the deal with the government should be ready in 48 hours.
He, however, said that the ASUU leadership cannot make any announcement on any deal without the consent of the members.
“We met briefly in the speaker’s office. We have taken note of what they have covered. As you know, in my union, we operate bottom-up, we don’t take decisions on their behalf without taking their consent.
“We have agreed that between now and tomorrow, we are going to get some documentation—signed— that we can take to our members. We will do that as soon as possible for the interest of Nigerians,” Osodeke said.
Also speaking, Speaker Gbajabiamila disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari will formally announce the deal reached with the striking university lecturers Tuesday (today).
Gbajabiamila said Buhari has agreed to some demands of the lecturers after two meetings he (president) had with the House leadership.
Meanwhile, branches of the striking university-based academic union will commence traditional voting today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) over the ongoing strike by the lecturers.
Following the deal with the government, the over 123 ASUU branches will be meeting to vote for or against the strike suspension and results will be transmitted to the National Executive Council (NEC) for final decision.
